Instruction 5
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.

In modern society, where media coverage is ubiquitous, there is a claim that no living man or woman can be regarded as a hero because their reputation will eventually be diminished under media scrutiny. While it is undeniable that media exposure can tarnish a person’s reputation, this does not necessarily mean that a hero’s positive image will collapse. Even if imperfections are revealed, society may still regard certain individuals as heroes.
First and foremost, it is important to acknowledge that no one is perfect. As Alexander Pope once said, “to err is human.” When every aspect of a person’s life is exposed to the public through the media, their reputation is bound to be compromised. A hero’s personal flaws might not align with society's moral expectations. For instance, a courageous firefighter, willing to risk his life to save others, might be discovered having an extramarital affair, which could severely damage his reputation. Moreover, the media may exaggerate such negative aspects to attract more attention, potentially biasing public opinion against the individual. In extreme cases, media scrutiny could focus solely on a hero’s flaws, overshadowing their positive contributions and diminishing their standing in society.
However, this argument assumes that the media will always focus on the negative and extensively probe into every detail of a hero’s life. This assumption is not necessarily accurate. The media, due to limited resources and the need for public engagement, may not prioritize uncovering every negative aspect of a hero’s character. Additionally, it is unfair to assume that all media outlets are biased. In many countries, such as the United States, the First Amendment ensures the existence of independent media that provides information from diverse perspectives. Even if some media outlets are politically motivated, it would be highly unlikely that all media would deliberately focus on a hero’s flaws, leaving no room for a balanced portrayal.
Even if a hero’s reputation is diminished by media scrutiny, it is crucial to recognize that society may still view him or her as a hero. To understand this, we must revisit the definition of a hero. Heroes are individuals who possess qualities that society admires, such as valor, self-sacrifice, and a commitment to the public good. These defining qualities are what elevate someone to hero status. Therefore, as long as the core characteristics that define heroism are intact, media exposure of personal flaws may not negate a person’s heroic status. Take, for instance, the firefighter mentioned earlier. Even if his affair becomes public knowledge, if he risks his life to save others, his heroism will not be overshadowed by his personal failings. It is his courage and selflessness that truly define him as a hero, regardless of his mistakes.
In conclusion, while media scrutiny has the potential to tarnish an individual’s reputation, this does not necessarily lead to the collapse of their heroic image. The media may focus on negative aspects, but this is not guaranteed, and even if it does, the public may still recognize and respect the key qualities that define a hero. Imperfections, when balanced by genuine acts of bravery and selflessness, will not diminish the recognition of a true hero.
